Meeting the Needs of Older Members with Disabilities
    February 16, 2012 | 3:00pm EST

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ensures that everyone with a disability will have equal opportunity through equal access. Passed into law in 1990, the ADA is a living document that has been updated to continually protect the civil rights of people with disabilities.

The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (“ADA Amendments Act” or “Act”) became effective January 1, 2009 and the Department of Justice published revised final regulations implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for title II (State and local government services) and title III (public accommodations and commercial facilities) on September 15, 2010. These requirements, or rules, clarify and refine issues that have arisen over the past 20 years and contain new and updated requirements.

As you increase your outreach to Older Americans, including those with disabilities, ensuring access to your services is paramount. This session will examine relative regulations within the ADA and provide practical guidance for meeting the regulations through cost and time efficient strategies.

    Speakers:

    • Cheri Hofmann, Distance Learning Coordinator, Southeast ADA Center
    • Elizabeth Jennings, Program Associate, National Disability Institute
    • Melanie Stern, Federation Senior Program Officer

Assessing the Economic Well Being of Older Members: The Elder Economic Security Standard Index
    April 19, 2012 | 3:00pm EST

The Elder Economic Security Standard Index is a measure of economic security for older adults developed by Wider Opportunities for Women in collaboration with the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Elder Index benchmarks basic costs of living for elder households. It illustrates how costs of living vary geographically and are based on the characteristics of elder households: household size, housing status (homeownership or renter), transportation and health status. The costs are for basic needs of elder households; they are based on market costs and assume no subsidies. Matt Unrath will discuss the ways in which the index can be used to assess the economic security of older members and to impact public policy.

    Speakers:

    • Melanie Stern, Federation Senior Program Officer
    • Matt Unrath, Director, Family Economic Security Program, Wider Opportunities for Women
