Can YOU promote positive change and challenge misconceptions about disability employment? Enter the What can YOU do? Video Contest sponsored by the Campaign for Disability Employment (CDE), a national collaborative effort funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy.. The contest seeks compelling videos that reflect the diversity of skills that people with disabilities add to America’s workforce and economy, challenge misconceptions about disability and employment, and/or highlight employers’ inclusive programs and practices.

The CDE will recognize videos in up to three categories.

    • What Can YOU Do? (General Public Category)
Entries must be about 60 seconds in length and should appeal to a broad audience. Potential themes may include, but certainly are not limited to: focusing on ability and promoting positive change by challenging misconceptions about the skills and talents of people with disabilities; the diverse skills and talents of people with disabilities; the benefits of an inclusive workforce to society; and the correlation between disability and innovation. The key theme: At work, it’s what people CAN do that matters.
    • What WILL You Do? (Youth Category)
Entries must be about 60 seconds in length and should either be produced by youth or appeal to a youth audience. Potential themes may include, but certainly are not limited to: why work is important to a person’s identity; inspiration for youth with disabilities to achieve employment goals; the importance of expectation in helping young people set high expectations for themselves; and the value of mentorships and/or work-based learning experiences. Key theme: Businesses need people who can think differently about how to solve problems and get the job done. What will YOU do to become tomorrow’s leaders, or mentor future leaders?
    • What ARE you doing? (Employer Category)
Entries may be up to three minutes in length and should highlight effective disability employment practices in action. Potential themes may include, but certainly are not limited to: disability as part of diversity; return-to-work for people with acquired disabilities; the aging workforce; the value of a workplace culture inclusive of disability; and flexible work arrangements/customized employment. The key theme: Good workplace policies and practices for people with disabilities benefit everyone and make good business sense.

The goal of the contest is to encourage film makers to produce videos that reflect the diversity of skills people with disabilities offer, challenge common misconceptions about disability and employment, and remind everyone that at work, it’s what people CAN do that matters. Winning videos will be used to encourage employers and others to recognize the value and talent people with disabilities bring to the workplace.
